Changing The Conversation

"The objective of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives." - Robert Maynard Hutchins

Have I mentioned that this project is completely voluntary? The DILo (Digital Innovation Lounge) project has been an extraordinary experience so for with 5 weeks in. What has been most impressive so far is watching the student take charge of their own learning. The SILC (Student Innovation Leadership Committee) captains have truly taken charge of their project meetings, established consistent real-world collaboration with their TCU Interior Design Coach and their Huckabee Architects. What makes taking charge of their learning impressive is the change in conversation.

Having experts in the field as mentors has noticeable changed the way the teams think critically about the project in terms of relevance and functionality. The influence has made collaboration meaningful within the teams. They no longer sit and fantasize about the what ifs, now they evaluate the why to extrapolate the rationale behind the design. The conversation has definitely changed. Might I remind you, this is a voluntary activity. These remarkable students are schedule their own free time to collaborate with one another and the community. Sometimes, I have to turn off the notifications in the Slack to accomplish other task, but the discussions have become so rich to where I find myself following along at all times. Below is the email I received displaying the project disucssions in the past week. This is evidence that it's getting good! The culture is definitely beginning to change it's view about how students learn, starting with the conversation students are having.
